The Repercussions of the Trade War in Canada – June 5, 2025

Anthony Housefather, Liberal MP for Mount Royal, shares his memories of his friend and former colleague Marc Garneau with our host Catherine Lafrance. The former astronaut and minister passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76. The effects of the trade war with the United States are being strongly felt in Canada. The trade deficit now stands at $7.1 billion — an all-time high — according to former Quebec Treasury Board President Martin Coiteux. He explains on our show that this is due to the large volume of goods imported by the United States at the start of the year. We assess the impact of President Trump's tariff hikes on Quebec's aluminium industry with François Racine, President and CEO of AluQuébec.

Daily Recap - June 5, 2025

MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as they convene for the daily question period in the House of Commons. Ministers Mélanie Joly (industry) and François-Philippe Champagne (finance) as well as Liberal MP Terry Sheehan face questions on the federal response to the Trump administration’s move to increase global tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25 to 50 per cent. Ontario Premier Doug Ford speaks with reporters at Queen’s Park as the legislature prepares to rise for the summer. He discusses his government’s newly passed legislation (Bill 5) to suspend provincial and municipal laws for certain projects deemed to have economic importance. He also comments on U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent tariff hike on Canadian steel and aluminum. Yves Perron, the Bloc Québécois critic for agriculture, agri-food, and supply management, holds a press conference on Parliament Hill regarding the adoption of Bill C-202, legislation aimed at protecting supply management and Quebec agriculture in trade agreements. He is joined by Bloc Québécois MPs Christine Normandin and Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay. Quebec Immigration Minister Jean-François Roberge unveils new targets for permanent immigration as part of a consultation document for the province’s 2026–2029 multi-year plan. Three scenarios will be reviewed during a parliamentary committee hearing scheduled for the fall. The proposed thresholds range from 25,000 to 45,000 permanent immigrants annually—well below the approximately 65,000 admitted in 2024. Roberge argues that high levels of temporary immigration, which fall under federal jurisdiction, are putting significant strain on public finances, housing, education, and the health care system. At a news conference in Regina, Steve Roberts, vice president of the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency's operations division, provides an update on the wildfire situation in the province. Manitoba ministers Ian Bushie (natural resources and Indigenous futures) and Lisa Naylor (transportation and infrastructure) provide an update on the wildfire situation in the province. They are joined at the news conference in Winnipeg by Kristin Hayward (assistant deputy minister with the Conservation Officer Service and Manitoba Wildfire Service) and Christine Stevens (assistant deputy minister with the Manitoba Emergency Management Organization). In Brussels, Belgium, Defence Minister David McGuinty speaks with reporters ahead of a meeting with his NATO counterparts.
